Original marker drawing on paper.

9"x9" unframed.

In this work, I drew my mom working at her sewing table. She makes beautiful, skillful, handcrafted things at home. I wanted to create an environment both warm and elusive.

This drawing is one of a series of works where I explore the relationship between people and the concept of home. I've always been fascinated by domestic spaces. Within this subject matter, I search for similarities between spaces, the idiosyncrasies of each, and the way people are in a place they call, or don’t call, their home. Within scenes of everyday life, I hope to highlight the underlying notion that the “everyday” is only as objective as the perspective through which it’s experienced. The places I paint and draw are filtered through an off-putting or even eerie lens, and I often abstract interiors and disrupt the space to reflect the way the familiar can seem surreal. For me, painting and drawing are intimate acts, and I use that to reflect the intimate feeling within a home.
